LAWRENCE – After taking the summer off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lawrence City Band will hold the opening concert of its summer concert series 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 in front of the William Kelly Bandstand in historic South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and the Rice Foundation, the city band presents concerts at 8 p.m. every Wednesday night through July 14 in South Park.
The following are the music themes to be presented throughout the summer concert series:
May 26 – Celebrations!
June 2 – Journeys
June 9 – Showtime!
June 16 – Dance the Summer Away
June 23 – La Noche Caliente
June 30 – Watercolors
July 7 – American Tribute
July 14 – Hollywood and Broadway Favorites
The band is conducted by Paul Popiel. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Lied Center on the University of Kansas Campus.
The band will be socially distanced and perform on the east side of South Park east of the bandstand on the concrete slab. Participants are asked to adhere to social distancing guidelines in the park, keeping at least six feet apart from others except those from the same household.
