Stream advisory issued for Quail Creek, Yankee Tank Creek

The City of Lawrence has issued a Stream Advisory for Quail Creek and Yankee Tank Creek to the confluence of the Wakarusa River, effective Thursday, May 20, 2021.

A lift station overflow due to excessive rainfall and this week’s wet weather conditions caused the stream advisory. The public should avoid contact with the affected streams and restrict pet access to those waterways until any impacts from the advisory are negligible.

Advisory signs have been posted along the affected area. See map for the affected area.

This stream advisory has no effect on the drinking water in Lawrence.

Sanitary sewer contents are known to have pathogens, including E. coli bacteria. Water-borne pathogens can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, rashes, infections and other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.

The stream advisory will remain in effect until monitoring indicates conditions are safe. City staff will continue monitoring and sampling the creeks and update the public when the advisory is lifted.
