Homicide – Update

The victim in yesterday’s stabbing is identified as 66-year-old Daniel Evan Brooks of Lawrence.

LKPD officers responded to the Dillons at 1015 W. 23rd St. at approximately 8:20 a.m. Wednesday in response to a possible stabbing.

Officers arrived on scene and encountered a male suspect still holding a knife. Officers spoke to the suspect and convinced him to drop the weapon.

Mr. Brooks was located and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The suspect is identified as 54-year-old Robert Earl Davis of Lawrence.

The victim’s dog was also injured in the incident. LKPD Animal Control officers transported the dog to the Lawrence Humane Society where he was stabilized and subsequently transported to a local animal hospital for further treatment.

As of today, the dog is back at the Lawrence Humane Society and is recovering.

Davis was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of 2nd-degree murder and cruelty to animals.

The incident is still under investigation, and an affidavit was submitted to the Douglas County District Attorney for charging consideration.
