City announces Interim Sustainability Director

December 28, 2021

The City of Lawrence is excited to announce that Solid Waste Division Manager Kathy Richardson will be serving as the City’s Interim Sustainability Director. Her role will begin January 1, 2022.

“Kathy has been an important part of the City’s environmental sustainability efforts for many years, and we are thrilled to have her take on the interim role of Sustainability Director,” said Casey Toomay, Assistant City Manager.

As the champion for Environmental Sustainability, Kathy will be working with all of our outcome teams to make progress on the key strategies identified in our strategic plan. She will also work with the City’s Sustainability Advisory Board as well as continue work on projects already underway, such as the Climate Action Plan, Common Ground Program, energy monitoring for city buildings, and compost and food waste pilot projects. Kathy will also work closely with Kim Criner Ritchie, who is leading sustainability efforts for Douglas County during this interim period.

“I am honored to take on the role of Interim Sustainability Director for the City of Lawrence,” said Kathy Richardson. “Our team is doing important work to protect and restore our ecosystem so that we can make it healthier and more balanced for future generations.”

During this interim period, Solid Waste Operations Supervisor Mike Brown will be taking on additional duties and responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the Solid Waste Division.

The City and Douglas County will be discussing the long term plans for the sustainability director position in the coming weeks.
