LPRD offers summer martial arts courses for children, adults

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering Gator Bites, Little Dragons, and Karate–Okinawan Kenpo for martial artists of all ages to learn self-defense and personal development.

Gator Bites is designed for students five years-old to seven years-old and teaches basic Tae Kwon Do and self-defense concepts through games and age-appropriate exercises. Students will learn to follow directions and respect appropriate boundaries. The program also emphasizes listening and having fun. This class is offered 3-3:40 p.m. Sundays, June 5-Aug. 21, at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St. Cost is $44 per child. Enroll online at http://lprd.org/activity?n=317130.

Little Dragons is available for participants ages five-years old to seven years-old and teaches basic stances while developing coordination, control and balance. Participants will gain confidence, improve attention span and learn to respect others in a positive and fun environment. This class is offered 12-12:40 p.m. Sundays, June 5-Aug. 21, at the Community Building, 115 West 11th St. Cost is $44 per child. Enroll online at http://lprd.org/activity?n=317125.

Karate – Okinawan Kenpo, available for both adults and children eight years-old and older, explores the traditional style of Okinawan Karate for the purposes of self-defense and personal development. Students will strengthen the body, improve posture, and increase self-confidence. The skills learned in this class will also be helpful in avoiding or minimizing violence. This class is offered 12:45-2 p.m. Sundays, June 5-Aug. 21, at the Community Building, 115 West 11th St. Cost is $77 per person. Enroll online at http://lprd.org/activity?n=317110.
