You’re invited: Community conversations about policing in Lawrence

July 5, 2023

The Community Police Oversight Work Group is hosting two upcoming community conversations to discuss policing in our community. Interested community members are encouraged to attend both sessions as the second meeting will be based on topics mentioned during the first session.

  • The first session will be 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 10, at the Carnegie Building.
  • The second session will be 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 31, at the Carnegie Building.

The community conversations are intended to provide input to the workgroup members that will inform their ongoing work and eventual recommendations for the City Commission. The sessions will consist of facilitated small group discussions lead by Jonathan Morris of J Morris Consulting.

An electronic questionnaire will be available later in July for anyone who is unable to attend either community conversation. For anyone who needs accommodation at the sessions (i.e. sign language interpretation, etc.), please reach out to Casey Toomay, Assistant City Manager: ctoomay@lawrenceks.org. Food and drink will be provided.

The sessions will be recorded and posted online afterward. There will not be virtual participation at these sessions, and anyone unable to attend in person is encouraged to complete the electronic questionnaire.

The Community Police Oversight Work Group was formed in 2022 to review and make recommendations related to the process in which complaints against law enforcement officers are addressed. The Work Group is also tasked with making recommendations to the City Commission to enhance community police oversight and relations.
