City Compost facility to reopen March 5; 2022 City-load dates set

Beginning Saturday, March 5, the City of Lawrence Compost Facility, located at 1420 East 11th Street, will reopen to the public. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until December 10, weather permitting.

Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste for $10. Dump trucks and other large loads may be charged an additional fee. Acceptable items include leaves, grass clippings, garden waste and prunings from trees and shrubs. Tree trunks and large limbs must not be longer than four feet and no more than eight inches in diameter. All materials must be loose (i.e., no plastic bags, bundles or ties).

Materials not accepted at the Compost Facility include lumber, pallets, sod, stones, rope, fill dirt, food waste, metal and plastic.

Residents can also purchase compost and woodchips for $10 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Residents must bring a shovel or other tools, as compost and woodchip purchases are self-loaded.

Additionally, the City is announcing its 2022 Compost and Woodchip City-Load event dates, which occur on the first Saturday of the month from April to October, and allow customers to have compost and/or woodchips loaded into their trucks or trailers by City staff using loading equipment for $10 per scoop. There is a limit of three scoops per visit. The 2022 Dates are listed below.

All transactions at the Compost Facility are CASH ONLY. Compost and woodchips from the City’s Compost Facility are not intended for commercial applications.

The compost facility will be open all Saturdays, except for the Saturday following Thanksgiving, November 26, or if other extraneous factors prevent opening. Residents should always check the Compost Facility webpage for information about Saturday availability, or contact Municipal Services & Operations Customer Service at 785-832-7800.
