Lawrence Crews Aid Neighbor

Manhattan Tornado Offers Experience

Clean Up

The June 11 tornado that struck Manhattan, Kansas damaged homes and businesses and left an estimated $20 million in clean up costs.

Each year, Kansas communities confront the aftermath of severe weather. And each year, communities reach out to help.
“Only a couple years ago Lawrence experienced a damaging microburst,” noted Chuck Soules, Director of Lawrence Public Works. “These situations provide ourcommunity with an opportunity to not only be a good neighbor, but they to offer our employees the hands on experience that helps keep Lawrence prepared.”

Lawrence Public Works sent three dump trucks, a backhoe and a utility truck with chainsaws and tools. Seven Lawrence Public Works staff spent a week hauling debris from homes that were completely destroyed to a temporary landfill 12 miles out of town.

“Our employees did a fine job in a professional and effective manner. By helping other communities in a time of need, it trains our crews and better prepares us on the effectiveness of having a plan,” said David Kraus, Field Supervisor.
