Lawn & Garden Safety Tips
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical notes that while accidents can occur at home, a few simple precautions can reduce the chance of injury while working in your yard or tackling do-it-yourself projects.
GARDEN TOOLS & PRODUCTS
- Check equipment before first use of the season to ensure it is in good working condition.
- Rakes, spades and pruning clippers should not be left lying on the ground. Ladders should be placed on their sides.
- Store pesticides and herbicides on high shelves or inside locked cabinets, out of reach of children.
- Wear appropriate clothing including: gloves, long-sleeved shirts and eye protection.
MOWERS & POWER TOOLS
- Never allow small children to operate or play with power tools or mowers.
- Do not operate if fatigued, on medications or you have been using alcohol or prescription drugs.
- Remove debris from work areas.
- Never start or run an engine inside a closed area.
- Keep pets out of work areas.
- Never leave machines running: turn off blades, unplug trimmers, set brakes and remove keys.
- Never mow on wet grass. If using a riding mower, mow up and down slopes, never across.
