City Commission

The Lawrence City Commission is the governing and legislative body of the City of Lawrence. It comprises five Commissioners who are elected at-large on a non-partisan basis. The City Commission passes resolutions and ordinances, establishes policies for the City, approves the budget and hires the City Manager.

Structure and Election

City Commission elections are administered by Douglas Couty, Kansas, Elections Office every two years. The next election for the City of Lawrence, Kansas, City Commission is Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The City Commission consists of five Commissioners elected at-large. Each Commissioner serves a four-year term. In 2023, the registered voters of the City will elect three Commissioners to the City Commission. They will join the two Commissioners, who were elected to four-year terms in 2021, to form the new City Commission.

The new City Commission will be sworn in at the City Commission meeting on the first Tuesday in December. At that meeting, Commissioners will elect a Mayor and Vice-Mayor, who will serve in those positions for the ensuing year.

Commission Meetings

The City Commission holds regular meetings on the first, second and third Tuesday of the month. Unless otherwise noted, meetings start at 5:45 p.m. and will be held in the City Commission Room, located on the First Floor of City Hall at 6 East 6th Street. City Commission and all City board and commission meetings are held in a hybrid format, people can attend in-person or virtually. City Commission meetings are live broadcast and archived on the City’s YouTube Channel.
