Navigating Nature (Year round)
Learn how wildlife navigates using landmarks, magnetism and the stars. Students will learn the basics of map and compass reading skills. (Students should be able to add and subtract)
Life in the Forest (Year round)
Explore woodland ecosystems of Kansas . Students will learn the basic elements of ecosystems with a focus on the structure, plants and animals diversity, biomass, and carrying capacity.
Prairies-Seas of Grass (Year round)
Students will explore the concept of ecosystem while focusing on the unique qualities of the Kansas tallgrass prairie, its plants and animals. They will learn about biodiversity, food webs, and prairie adaptations.
Wetland Wonders (Spring to fall)
Students will study the complex wetlands ecosystem from microscopic to macroscopic life. They will catch and identify macroinvertebrates and learn how the chemical makeup of water is essential to the health of life in the wetlands.
The Earliest Prairie People (year round)
In this hands on program students will learn how the earliest Americans used the natural resources of the prairie, rivers and woodlands to meet their survival needs. Students will study what plants and animals were used for food, to make tools, for shelters, and what skills would have been most important to early native Americans.
How to schedule
- Classes may be scheduled from Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Field trips and indoor classes must be scheduled by calling the nature center directly. Registration for school programs are not handled by other Parks & Recreation facilities. Field trips are only offered at the Nature Center.
- Please allow at least 2 weeks notice.
- Group sizes of more than one class may be scheduled if the nature center has staff available. The classroom can accommodate up to 50 students. Additional space is available in the outdoor amphitheater. Please inform staff at the time of scheduling if any of your group requires special assistance.
- All field trips are 2-2 1/2 hours in length. All classes attending field trips should be prepared to go outside with clothing appropriate to the weather.
- Payment is due at the time of the program. Schools may send advance payment for indoor programs. Checks or money orders should be made payable to: Lawrence Parks, Recreation and Culture.
