2023 Back to School Community Safety Fair

This is a popular community event that, as the school season begins, gives community members the opportunity to interact with first responders and learn about public safety resources in Lawrence and Douglas County.

The community Back to School Safety Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Community agencies last offered the fair 2018 and 2019, before the pandemic. All Lawrence and Douglas County residents are invited to the fair to learn more about personal, family, and community safety best practices as well as about local resources available.

The park will be filled with first responder vehicles from the Lawrence Kansas Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, kids activities, bicycle safety games, information on public health, the Douglas County, KS- Emergency Management's "Wheel of Misfortune," the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Smoke Trailer, and more!

The annual community Back to School Safety Fair also includes the Cram the Cruiser benefit, which pits local agencies against each other in a bid to see who can collect the most charitable donations. This year, Cram the Cruiser will support Blue Santa. School supplies will be collected as part of the competition between the Lawrence Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the KU Public Safety Office, and the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department.

The Lawrence Police Department, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, and Douglas County Emergency Management are co-hosts of the event. Several other community partners are scheduled to attend and offer information about safety and health.
