In 2023, the City of Lawrence contracted with Alta Planning + Design to develop a bicycle wayfinding strategy as recommended by the Lawrence Bikes plan and Transportation 2050. This project was funded as part of the 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program. This process resulted in the creation of a document containing standards and strategies for developing and implementing a cohesive bicycle wayfinding system across the community.

The Lawrence Multimodal Transportation Commission created a subcommittee, including public stakeholders and City staff, to guide the process and provide local input and perspective. A list of subcommittee members can be found here.

On May 14, 2024 the strategies were accepted by the Lawrence City Commission. The document includes background information on general best practices for wayfinding systems, a summary of the subcommittee’s process, a unique family of signs, and a map demonstrating where signage would go on an existing bicycle route.
