Master Plan Goals Update August 2019

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan is a comprehensive, community-input document developed through a year-long process that looked at the existing recreational facilities, programs and services and determined the current and future level of service for the community. The plan prioritizes the needs and desires for upgrading existing and potentially creating new facilities and services, helping determine the phasing, timing, funding and other details of proposed project and services for the next several years.

At the February 09, 2016, Lawrence City Commission meeting, Parks and Recreation staff presented its recommendation to commissioners to approve a contract with GreenPlay LLC to update the Parks and Recreation Department’s Comprehensive Master Plan, which was developed in 2000. The City Commission approved the contract and developed a Master Plan Steering Committee made up of a cross-section of community leaders and stakeholders and user groups.

Master Plan Development History

A series of meetings assisted in the development of the 2016-17 Comprehensive Master Plan. The meetings ranged from staff focus groups, user/stakeholder focus groups and community meetings to aid in the development of the new plan.
